Exceptions New Perspectives Contest

In April, Exceptions debuted a collection of tactile art where painters drew inspiration from poetry. Taking ideas from one medium and reinterpreting them in another often leads to unexpected insights and new points of view. In keeping with our mission to challenge perceptions and upend the status quo, we have chosen “New Perspectives” as the theme of our 2015 contest.

The goal is simple: select an inspiration from any medium (a painting, a song, a book, a building) and create an original work that captures some essence of that inspiration. The submission must take a different form than the original: for example, a poem that reinterprets a piece of classical music, or a short story that draws its theme from a photograph.

In your submission (email to exceptionsjournal@gmail.com with the subject “Contest Submission”), please include the following:

  • The title and creator of your chosen inspiration (e.g., The Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci)
  • Your submission, formatted according to our standard guidelines
  • A brief paragraph explaining your inspiration and your “new perspective”

For this contest, we are accepting submissions from creators across the visual ability spectrum (sighted, blind, and anywhere in between). Submissions are open from midnight on June 15th to 11:59 p.m. on October 31st, 2015. Three winners will be published in the forthcoming second volume of Exceptions and receive a free print edition; other selected submissions may be published online.

This contest challenges writers and artists to explore new ways of telling stories. Be daring and creative. We look forward to hearing from you.
